Dutchbricks on tour: Skaerbaek Fan Weekend 2025

From 24 to 30 September, a group of no fewer than 15 members of Dutchbricks travelled together to Denmark for the annual Skaerbaek Fan Weekend (SFW). This is an event that always attracts many AFOLs (Adult Fans of LEGO) from all over the world. In addition to the SFW, there are also numerous other LEGO-related activities to do and visit. Dutchbricks organises the group accommodation and, of course, there is also a lot of time spent together during the week in Denmark. However, registering for the various activities is your own choice and responsibility. Our members Danny Geboers and Frank Derks are happy to tell you about their experiences during this year's trip to Skaerbaek.

REPORT BY DANNY GEBOERS

My first time at Skaerbaek Fan Weekend with Dutchbricks. Wow! It was so cool, I wouldn't have wanted to miss it!

I've been a member of Dutchbricks for a year now, and as an AFOL I had already heard and read a lot about Skaerbaek Fan Weekend. When I got the chance to register, there was no doubt in my mind. I wanted to experience this! Side note: I was so excited that I forgot to tell my wife. 😊 Dutchbricks had organised everything down to the last detail. We knew exactly when to set our alarms for important registration moments such as the LEGO Employee Shop (P-Shop) lottery, the LEGO Campus Tour, Factory Tour and much more...

We were fortunate to have been allocated three cottages by the organisation. So there were 15 Dutchbricks members in Skaerbaek. As I was new, I was quite excited to see who I would meet. I didn't know many of the members yet. Fortunately, the journey there with Frank and Patrick P. was very enjoyable and before we knew it, we were in Skaerbaek – after spending the night at Patrick P.'s house in Enschede.

Wednesday was travel day, and after a pleasant drink and a game of Hitser, we went to bed early, because the next day was AFOL Day at LEGO House. This was my second time at LEGO House. It is such a special experience, especially because there were only AFOLs there. My favourites were the impressive MOCs by fan designers and the LEGO history in the basement. There was also an opportunity to have your LEGO House purchases signed by LEGO Designers such as Stuart and Markus.

On Friday, 15 of us went to LEGOLAND. The last time I was there was when I was 7 years old (I'm now 42), so it was great to see it again. And especially because the weather was so good. We had beautiful sunshine and dry weather all week – quite unusual for Denmark.

The weekend featured the two-day Skaerbaek event. Maarten and Frank both displayed their MOCs at the Skaerbaek event. It was so cool to be there with two Dutchbricks members among all the international participants. There were two halls filled with MOCs and a few shops.

After lots of walking and taking in all the impressions at the fair, Monday was already the last day of activities. I was lucky enough to be able to go to the P-Shop and Campus Tour. It was really cool to get a tour of the LEGO Campus and get a feel for what it's like to work at LEGO.

On Monday evening, we enjoyed building a LEGO set in our cottage and then went to bed early so we could drive back to the Netherlands on Tuesday.

I can only say that this was an amazing experience and I would like to thank everyone for the fun, enthusiasm, winning at Hitser 😉 and I am already looking forward to next year. Thank you for organising it! And if you are in any doubt, I can wholeheartedly recommend joining us next year.

REPORT FRANK DERKS

For me, Skaerbaek is a fun trip with friends who share the same hobby. During the day, we do activities together, and in the evening, we play games. We left for Denmark on Wednesday, 24 September, and when we arrived, the weather was lovely and sunny. It was a great start to a week we were all really looking forward to.

On Thursday, we had a visit to LEGO House planned. This is perhaps my favourite day. Among other things, you can talk to designers of LEGO sets and MOCs (My Own Creations). It's wonderful to see what they have designed and created. It's really a step above what you usually see.

On Friday, we had a fun outing to LEGOLAND Billund with attractions such as roller coasters (which, given my age, I quickly decided was enough 😉) and a kind of Madurodam made of LEGO.

Over the weekend, we naturally attended the Skaerbaek event. There are beautiful MOCs on display, ranging in quality and size from small to large. Workshops are also offered, but to be honest, they are not always that good or interesting. The auction that is organised there is fun to attend, but it is really something for collectors. Personally, I find the auction items a bit on the expensive side, but it's not something you have to participate in.

The food in Skaerbaek is very well catered for. Enough for everyone and varied dishes. Absolutely top notch. As extra activities alongside SFW, the guided tours are fun to do. This time, I was also able to visit the P-Shop, where you had the opportunity to purchase your favourite set(s) at attractive prices. Many AFOLs eagerly took advantage of this. Many had already been there before me. Nevertheless, it was definitely worth it.

After spending just under a week in Denmark, packed with activities and seeing lots of sights, it's nice to be back in my own bed after returning home on Tuesday 30 September.
